Five Minutes With … Steve Burton

— By Tom Stacy

With the Franco finale airing this week, Digest chatted with Steve Burton to gauge his thoughts on how everything played out.

Soap Opera Digest: What was your first reaction when you heard that James Franco wanted to come to GH?

Steve Burton: "Why? You make five million a movie. Why? You want to torture yourself with this kind of workload?" I was very surprised but once I got past the initial "Why?" I was like, "Great! What can we do to make a great story?"

Digest: Were you happy with the final results?

Burton: I think it's been great for the show. We made it into a lot of publications that we'd never get into [otherwise]. I think it's been great all around. We had great story going into it, I think we had great story with Franco there and hopefully we can keep up the momentum after that.

Digest: What did you think of the idea of Jason having a stalker?

Burton: I definitely thought it was interesting. Up until then, I've kind of been in like in everybody's story, and this story was really focusing on Jason and his wanting to put the gun down for Michael, and then Franco came in. That's a whole new side to Jason, so that's cool.

Digest: What did you think of that glass cage he kept Sam in?

Burton: I loved it. I think I actually lived in it when I first came to L.A. It's about as big as my first apartment. It would have been a lot nicer to have that!

Digest: [Head Writer] Bob Guza mentioned that he'd love to invite other big-name actors to Port Charles. What do you think of the idea?

Burton: I'm up for it. You've got to give the guy credit. Bob came up with a good story for this. It's almost a story where you could have plugged in another great actor and you were still going to have a great story. It wasn't like it was all about James Franco. It was about the character. So yeah, why not? It keeps everybody on their toes and keeps a good buzz going and nowadays, you need a little buzz and momentum with your story.
